1. Education in Canada

In Canada, provincial and territorial governments set up and run their own school systems. The education system in Canada encompasses both publicly-funded and private schools. Education is a provincial responsibility under the Canadian constitution, which means there are significant differences between the education systems of the different provinces. Education is, however, pivotal to Canadians, and standards across the country are uniformly high. When choosing your post-secondary education after finishing secondary education in Canada, you can choose one of the several great options that works best for you: quality institutions in other provinces across Canada and in the United States. According to the Canadian Bureau of International Education, from 2010 to 2017, Canada saw a 119 per cent increase in international students. International enrollment is now at nearly a half million in Canada.

Why secondary education in Canada?

Holistic Admissions

Institutions consider the whole applicant, not just numerical measures such as grades and test scores. General admission requires minimum 70% in recent two years with good academic standing, such as attendance expectations.

Economical Choice

Studying in Canada is affordable and economical. When it comes to secondary and post-secondary education, tuition fees are generally lower than colleges and universities in Australia, the U.K., and the U.S. The tuition fees for international students can range from approximately CAD 12,000 to CAD 14,000 per year.

Canadian Values in Education

The quality of Canadian teaching at all levels is high. Each province offers a relevant, engaging curriculum with a wide variety of choices for students to select across all disciplines. Each school and school board has a set of programs that are designed to meet varying student interests, such as dance, graphic design, or even theatre.

Strong, Internationally Recognized Credentials

The education system of each province is praised for their rigorous, quality-based delivery and as a result, their credentials are equally respected. If you are looking to study in the U.S., Canadian secondary credentials are valued just as much as their own diplomas. There are also many SAT and ACT testing centres that allow you to meet their standardized testing requirements essential for admission into US colleges and universities.

3. Highlights of Secondary Education System in Canada

  • Enacting intellectual engagement in classrooms
  • Learner-centred education: allowing students to share in decisions, believing in their capacity to lead, and remembering how it feels to learn (empowerment).
  • Specialized and specific subjects being taught by different teachers, with students moving from classroom to classroom after the conclusion of each lesson.
  • Requirement for successful completion of high school: students must pass provincial exams in several subjects.
  • General admission requirements for universities in Canada

4. Schools in Canada

  • Depending on the province or territory, children start with kindergarten at the age of 5 or 6 and continue to grades 1 to 12 until they are between 16 and 18.
  • The semesters are often divided into two terms each. Some schools in Canada run on a trimester system. The trimester is more common in elementary and middle schools than in high schools
